TJG Visits the "Scorpions" Special Olympics Team.

On May 21, 2025, Today’s Junior Golfer (TJG) had the privilege of visiting the South Gilbert “Scorpions” Special Olympics team during their gathering at Top Golf. Not only did we get to meet some incredible young athletes, but we also had the opportunity to donate golf equipment and apparel collected through a recent community drive.

The highlight of the night came when TJG presented a full set of TaylorMade clubs—including P770 irons, MG4 wedges, Qi10 fairways, and a driver—to an up-and-coming junior golfer named Wyatt. The gratitude expressed by the kids and their families for the donated clothing, shoes, hats, and gear was truly heartwarming and humbling.

It was a night we’ll never forget—full of smiles, encouragement, and the joy that comes from sharing the game of golf with those who love it most.

A Conversation with Wyatt

TJG: Wyatt, are these your first set of golf clubs?
Wyatt: Yes… can I give you a hug?

TJG: Of course! (Wyatt gives all of us from TJG a big hug.) Okay, now let’s go try them out!
Wyatt: What club should I try first?

TJG: That’s up to you.
Wyatt: (Takes the Qi10 3W out of the bag, pauses, and politely asks) Should I go right now?

TJG: Yes—show everyone how you can hit your new golf clubs!
Wyatt: OK!

Meet Wyatt

TJG: Jennifer (Wyatt's mother), can you tell us more about Wyatt’s story and background?
Jennifer: Wyatt is 12½ years old and was born prematurely here in Arizona. He spent nine days in the NICU. At age 3, he was diagnosed with autism. He also has a rare chromosome disorder—one that, as far as we know, no one else in the world has. He’ll be entering 6th grade this fall.

TJG: What are some of Wyatt’s hobbies or interests?
Jennifer: He’s always been musically gifted. At age 2, he started playing the keyboard and guitar by ear. He’s been playing the drums, his main instrument, for 2½ years. He loves performing and puts on a drum show every two months. He also practices martial arts and plays adaptive baseball with The Miracle League of Arizona in Scottsdale. And he loves building with Magna-Tiles—he creates amazing architectural structures with multiple rooms and staircases. It’s really cool.

TJG: What are his favorite foods?
Jennifer: He loves cucumbers, pasta, pizza, French fries, and Dr Pepper! He’ll try any food once and enjoys spicy food.

TJG: How long has he been involved in Special Olympics?
Jennifer: Wyatt has been an athlete with the South Gilbert Scorpions for several years. He’s participated in swimming, track, and basketball. This is his first year trying golf.

TJG: What did it mean to him to receive his first set of golf clubs?
Jennifer: It was incredible. He was so excited—it’s really boosted his confidence and his desire to play and improve. He wants to make everyone proud. He feels like he’s truly part of the team now—and he thinks it’s super cool! He’s been proudly showing off his clubs to everyone. I’m also very grateful—it was an unexpected and amazing surprise.

TJG: How would you describe Wyatt’s personality?
Jennifer: He’s everyone’s hype man! Whatever sport or event he’s part of, he’s cheering people on and getting the crowd involved. He has such a big heart and a magnetic personality. At one point, he even had his photo up on the Costco employee wall! He loves In-N-Out burgers and owns about 20 pairs of Crocs! He also loves serving at our church, Ministry La Mesa, where he helps pass out items to the homeless and enjoys visiting with everyone.

Bucket list: Disney World—Wyatt is saving his change!

Words from Chad Shuman, Scorpions Co-Founder

We had the chance to chat with Chad Shuman, one of the Scorpions’ founding leaders, about the heart of the program and its growing impact.

TJG: What is the general mission of Special Olympics?
Chad: The mission is best summed up in the motto: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” We want these angels on earth to experience success—not just in winning, but in every part of the journey. And yes, it can be a success every time, regardless of the outcome!

TJG: What are some of the most rewarding experiences you’ve had working with Special Olympics?
Chad: Honestly, the most rewarding part is how it changes your perspective on life. You’re forced to become a better person—in the best way possible. That might sound selfish, but I truly hope it’s just as meaningful for the athletes and their families as it is for me.

TJG: You’re involved in many great sports programs. What led you to start a golf program?
Chad: It started because Greg’s son, John Robert, and my daughter, CJ, both golf—and Greg and I love the game too. We asked around and found some interest, so we just went for it. Even if it had been just the two of us at the start, we were committed. At that very first practice, 13 kids showed up!

TJG: TJG recently donated a set of clubs. Why did you choose Wyatt?
Chad: I think you saw why when Wyatt asked if he could give you a hug. That’s just who he is. He’s always genuinely happy to see everyone—and always ready with a hug. He’s consistent, kind, and joyful. Honestly, we admire him for being a role model for how to go through life—happy and full of love.

A Night to Remember

Another highlight of the night was watching John Robert, one of the Scorpion golfers, absolutely crush his drives. He recently got to show off his skills at an event alongside Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker and Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. After seeing John Mark’s power, Booker—who has a sister with special needs—jokingly said he wanted John Mark on his golf scramble team.

This evening was unforgettable. For all of us at Today’s Junior Golfer, it was a reminder of what really matters—joy, laughter, and community. In truth, we received more from the kids than we could ever give!

Special thanks to Top Golf – San Tan for regularly hosting the Scorpions, and to Seville Golf and Country Club in Gilbert, AZ, for welcoming the team to their range each month to help these incredible athletes grow their skills and confidence in the game of golf.
